Start Your Engines

Another week starts, and what better way to dive into it than with a few free songs. Swedish label Songs I Wish wants to bring us summer-feelings with Moto Boy and offers What It Was Like To Be With You for free. Here you go:

I’m just listening to the new Fleet Foxes album, and it looks like this could be the Trials Of Van Occupanther of 2008! Very relaxed and catchy Alt/Country/Indie… definitely worth checking out!!!

The Lodger‘s latest album Life Is Sweet has just been released, and while I have yet to be convinced if it is as good as the debut, the band is so generous to offer us a song from it. Reviews have been mixed, but as always, it probably is best to decide for yourself. Here’s a little help:

New Album News

Hope you all had a good Easter Holiday… I sure did! As you might have noticed, I didn’t have much time for the blog, but I’ll do my best to pick up the speed again. Let’s see what goes…

Death Cab For Cutie has revealed the artwork for their highly anticipated next album, Narrow Stairs. I’ve been listening to the first single I Will Possess Your Heart over the last few days, and I really like it… the bass-line is just ace, and with a running time of just over 8 minutes, it is perfect for a long-song-lover like me. Really looking forward to the album! Here’s the cover of Narrow Stairs:
(including a stream of the single)

Death Cab For Cutie – Bend To Squares (MP3)
Death Cab For Cutie – Champagne From A Paper Cup (Live) (MP3)

Another album I’m looking for is Everything’s The Rush, the third album by UKs indie-dream-rockers Delays. Release date is May 5th, and a new video for another fine song called Hooray has just popped up. Watch and listen here.

Check out dredg‘s myspace for some tasters of their next album… could be a good one, too!

And while you’re surfing around MySpace anyway, check out The Good Old Days (stream-only), a new single by Leeds-lads The Lodger. Their debut was a refreshing offering of brit-pop, and going by this new song, album #2 will follow that lead. Fine with me, I could do with some more of those tunes! Life Is Sweet will be released in May.

Summer Soundtrack

The Lodger have been lingering around on my harddisk for quite a while now, but it was only with You Got Me Wrong that I got really hooked to them. So last week, their debut album Grown-Ups arrived here. Just in time for summer!

The Lodger hails from Leeds, UK, and was founded in 2004 by Ben Siddal. He recruited two friends for bass and drums, and in early 2005, they released their excellent debut single Many Thanks For Your Honest Opinion. Another single (Watching) followed, and the band also started heavy touring in 2006. Later that year, third single Let Her Go was released on Angular Records, and after that, The Lodger disappeared into Alan Smyth‘s Sheffield recording studio and only came up when the debut album Grown-Ups was finished.

When listening to Grown-Ups, I was often reminded of the Lightning Seeds, another band I highly apprechiate. The Lodger‘s songs are equally catchy and played to the point. There are more guitars here than on Lightning Seeds records, but the result remains the same: classic pop tunes with sharp-played hooks, tap-along melodies and witty lyrics. Now summer has finally arrived, Grown-Ups is the perfect soundtrack for hanging out in the great wide open (but it also works on a hot day at the office… 😉 ).
