The Eternal 50

As you might know, I’m a frequent visitor in German online-music-forum Laut.Bar. So recently, someone there came up with quite an interesting idea: every member should make a list with 50 eternal albums. All the lists will then be mingled together and points are given for each entry, and the result will be a forum-list of the 50 albums for eternity. Sounds quite interesting, doesn’t it?

Now you probably can imagine that it’s not even easy to narrow down such a list to 50 albums (my first draft had about 150), but the hard part is to bring those 50 into a suitable order. So I did the following: I gave each album points from 1 to 10 in these 5 categories:

– does the album have a long-time appeal?
– does it impress as a whole?
– are some of my favourite songs on it?
– does it have a cult-factor?
– is it original/innovative?

I then added all the points, and came up with the following result (numbers in brackets are the total points):

1 – The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (44)
2 – Mew – And The Glass Handed Kites (44)
3 – Porcupine Tree – In Absentia (43)

48 – Supertramp – Paris (Live) (37)
49 – Thirteen Senses – The Invitation (37)
50 – Anathema – A Natural Disaster (36)

That’s it. While writing this post, it became clear that I could have left out some of these albums and added some others, especially the ones from 35 to 50, but I decided to stick with the first version. What do you think? What would your eternal albums list look like? Let me know in the comments!

I will post the Laut.Bar-list as soon as it is available… very curious if some of my picks made the top-list! I guess Radiohead, Muse and Pink Floyd will definitely be there! 🙂
